You may have heard me talk about Jenzabar’s mission to maximize client success, one institution at a time. I recently heard a story about a university that maximizes student success, one student at a time.
“It started when a faculty member entered what seemed like a minor piece of information into our Jenzabar Retention system. A student, (I’ll call her Kara), didn’t have a book for that semester.
The system sent out an alert. We reached out to Kara and learned about the challenges she was facing.
It turns out she was in her senior year.
The choice she had made with regard to where she was living, in conjunction with the number of units she was taking in order to graduate on time, had set up a situation where, when all of her bills were paid, she simply did not have the money for this book.
So we got Financial Aid involved. Lo and behold, Kara had more funds available to her than she realized. Working together, we were not only able to come up with money for the text book, but we were also able to make Kara’s entire semester significantly easier.
The Jenzabar Retention alert system brought everybody into the loop at the same time, and we came up with a solution that was really a win-win.”
This story, told by Dr. Jeff Barnes, Dean of Academic Services at California Baptist University, illustrates the ever-blurring line between academics and student affairs in modern higher education.
Remember the “sink or swim” days when an institution’s prestige was tied to its ability to weed out students?
