Charleston Southern University (CSU) is one of South Carolina’s largest accredited, independent universities. Affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the University is dedicated to its mission of promoting academic excellence in a Christian environment. “Let’s Go Paperless”
At the center of the Charleston metropolitan area, situated on a 300-acre former rice and indigo plantation, CSU has a long history of integrating technology into the fabric of the traditional southern university. Among its many technological accomplishments, CSU was recognized as the first all-wireless campus in South Carolina. In 2006, Dell published a case study of the University’s innovative use of technology, and in 2009, it was the first university in South Carolina to implement a comprehensive Web-based radio system.
That same year, the University made a strategic decision to push its use of technology to the next level, with the ambitious goal of going paperless. At the time, everyday business processes, such as filling out and approving purchase orders, required copious amounts of printed paper and physical processing by CSU staff. Important information that students needed on a daily basis was being emailed or faxed back and forth. Valuable office space in four separate areas was being used solely to house paper documents.
The challenge was clear—move the entire campus to an efficient, streamlined, connected, and easily accessible online system. The goal: reduce labor, increase speed and quality of
information flow and processing, save space, improve responsiveness to students and administrative needs, and maybe save a few trees along the way. Continue reading…
